ARCHITECTS AND HEROES

A lively coffee shop offering delicious blends, crumbling almond croissants and interesting seasonal breakfasts, Architects is a must visit for the men and women about town. The coffee is served by cheerful and friendly baristas and you'll always see their dishes popping up here and there on Instagram. Previous dishes of note include strawberry crumpets with popping candy, and apple and rhubarb compote. You'll find more coffee available on the menu than food but they also have a glass case of baked goods on offer too.

OGILVIE'S

273 Rokeby Road, Subiaco, 600

Open for breakfast and cake, this little discovery came when deciding to walk the opposite way on Rokeby Road, the side less explored. A cute and country themed spot for coffee and cake, you may find yourself gazing at the preserves and specialty products sold around the cafe.

Drop by the Flower Market for the freshest in season flowers when looking for colour for  your home. My breakfast is an assortment of pastries from La Galette de France and lunch is a bowl full of warm meat from the Souvlaki Corner, depending on the weather. There are areas to sit and eat at and a mixture of cuisines from around the world. Squeeze past other avid fresh fruit and vegetable buyers for delicious white peaches and mangoes from Golden Choice and battle your way around the markets with a basket.

SIMON JOHNSON

169 Rokeby Road, Subiaco, 6008

Simon Johnson, "purveyor of quality foods", is located on Subiaco's most sought after spaces along Rokeby Road. Boasting home grown and imported foods of high quality, Simon Johnson also stocks a range of home wares and gifts. If you look to the back of the store, there is a fromagerie giving you the opportunity to walk in and walk out with a good slab of delicious cheese. With chocolate and confectionary from regions like England, France, Itay, Turkey and the United States, there's nothing stopping you from paying a visit.

THE SUBIACO BOOKSHOP

113 Rokeby Road, Subiaco, 6008

Independently owned and run for over twenty-six years by a mother and her daughter, showcasing on the walls important and noteworthy titles of varying genres. Quotes adorn the ceiling skirting, with the shop the colour of sunshine yellow. Here you'll find titles pertaining to history, gardening, art and design, food and wine, fashion and beauty and children's books to name a few. A charming bookshop to visit when in Subiaco.

JACKSON'S DRAWING SUPPLIES

103 Rokeby Road, Subiaco, 6008

One of only three branches left in Perth, Jackson's is the perfect creative place to fuel yourself, and your perhaps low stocked art supplies. Creative souls and the artistically inclined are often venturing into Jackson's to find world famous art and equipment. It's a one stop shop, home to books, watercolour paint pots, felt, calligraphy pens, clay and easels.

TARTS CAFE

212 Lake Street, Northbridge, 6003

A secret kept quiet by most locals, Tarts is a cafe and giftshop. Previously a house, it was renovated and changed into a giftshop and kitchen. Boardrooms, bedrooms are now dining spaces, kitchen and dining rooms are for the staff and guests. You can walk through the house to the back garden which is colourful and always welcoming, just incaseyou didn't quite feel like staying indoors for breakfast. It's a cafe-giftshop, selling wares and gifts your mother and grandmother wouldn't mind getting their hands on, and items for kids or for the home. Tarts also offers breakfast, lunch and dinner options and is a favourite among locals.

DAPHNE

454 William Street, Northbridge, 6003

Spacious, minimal and completely clutter free - you'll find Daphne Cafe a breath of fresh air. Owners Adam and Sophie cultivate art, space and minimalist designs in this cafe, with a portrait of Daphne hanging on the wall near them. Percolated cold drips and hot cups are worked around this cafe on William Street, situated nextdoor to William Top and Weston's Barbershop. If you fancy a little mystery, try their 'Gold Bar' or grab a La Paleta Popsicle to cool yourself in the summer heat. 

LITTLE BIRD CAFE

100 Lake Street, Northbridge, 6003

Welcome to one of the places in Northbridge that is constantly filling your Instagram feed. Worn couches beckon you to curl up with a book and a coffee, the large tables and copious amounts of seating invites you to bring along a group of friends for brunch and you'll have the choice of indoor or garden seating. With wholesome food and organic options, Little Bird Cafe is one of the rustic additions to Lake Street. 

THE STANDARD

28 Roe Street, Northbridge, 6003

One of the latest additions to the Northbridge neighbourhood is The Standard. Bar, garden and kitchen, the cool and colourful decor coupled with rooftop seating and a courtyard garden strung with fairy lights makes for a good place to visit for dinner. Friday nights are busy and the crowd ebbs and flows, make a reservation in advance as it's a prime place for after work drinks to celebrate the weekend. Dishes are predominately for sharing, with all but four for those who want to be selfish. If you choose to be selfish, you can't go past the lamb belly with sweet and spicy eggplant and grapefruit. 

SUPERSTAR WAFFLES

8/189 William Street, Northbridge, 6003

Nestled far down the end of William Street's Arcade 189, this cafe and dessert bar is always buzzing. It provides many locals a quick fix of sweetness, and with simple but well made waffles with just the right amount of cream and toffee. It's a place you may find yourself wistfully spending your afternoon, people watching or chatting away with friends, and two green tea lattes later, welcoming the evening crowd.

HYLIN

178 Railway Parade, West Leederville 6007

Hylin opened its doors not too long ago and has already established itself as a go-to destination for coffee and breakfast. Its white walls and complimentary blue hues make for a great spot filled with natural light and lovely service, Hylin will prove to be the height of your day. You may be familiar with the wall art, it has after all, been featured in many Instagram feeds of late. The rest of the cafe has been slightly neglected in photographs. Although sadly this is the case because the wall art is just so photogenic. The kitchen is busy, a flurry of flames and dishes in and out, the baristas busy steaming milk for countless coffees and the rest of the cafe and its customers left to their own devices. 

PICCOLO'S CORNER

58 St Leonard's Avenue, West Leederville, 6007

The interior is colourful and bright.What will draw you in is their kitsch decor. It's a mixture of modern and classic, with many of their teapots looking like items you'd either find in an op-shop or your grandmother's showcase cabinet. The cafe is full of character and always buzzing. Be prepared to wait at least half an hour before food is brought out to you on blue and white china plates, but I guess in that time you can sip away at a mango and almond smoothie while peering into people's gardens past their white picket fences.  There is no doubting the relaxed style breakfasts served, don't go past the smashed avocado.

LOW KEY CHOW HOUSE

140 Oxford Street, Leederville, 6007

 It's completely unsuspecting from the outside, marked by an "Open" sign with mahjong pieces and a good luck charm. The stripped back walls and floorboards bode well with the new and refined china, tables and wine glasses. The menu is a fun reflection of the attitude of the guys serving the food and the chow house itself. Famous lines from famous kung fu movies are coupled with cool Asian gangsters - icons from all sorts of Asian countries and dishes that go hand in hand with them.
